Francisco Canseco, the Republican candidate, is a small business owner. He is married and has three children. He helped start the Canseco foundation, which helps many important local causes. He was a delegate to the State Republican Convention in 2004, 2006, and 2008. He was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 2008.
Ciro Rodriguez, the Democratic candidate, has a BA in political science, and an MA in social work. He is married and has one daughter. He was elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 1987, where he served for 11 years. In 1997, he was elected to Congress and served four terms. He was elected to serve as the congressman from Texas’ 23rd Congressional District in 2006.
Some key issues seem to be federal spending, taxation, jobs, healthcare, energy, and immigration.
ISSUES
CANSECO
Canseco wants to limit federal spending and balance the national Budget. He also wants to start paying back the national debt. He believes that there shouldn't be as high of taxes for the middle and lower class. This is similar to what most GOP members believe.
When it comes to jobs, Canseco believes that the government shouldn't create jobs for people, but instead "foster and protect an environment in which Americans pursue their own entrepreneurial goals and dreams." He also believes in tax cuts for small businesses. This also aligns with GOP beliefs. They don't think the government should directly create jobs.
Canseco, just as most Republicans, believes that there needs to be limits on healthcare reforms. He wants a plan that makes it easier for small businesses to get treated like big companies when it comes to employee coverages, has a pre-tax deduction for insurance premiums for those that purchase their own health insurance, and prevents companies from denying coverage for those with pre-existing conditions.
Texas can produce lots of energy. Canseco believes that the country needs to expand energy production, research and develop more energy technologies, and stop taxes on energy production. This is similar to the Republicans, who believe that limits on energy are bad for the economy.
Canseco wants to make it a top priority to deport illegal criminals involved with drugs and smuggling. He believes that anyone who wants to come to this country for a better life should do so legally and obey the rules. He does not believe in amnesty. For the most part, this aligns with Republican views.
RODRIGUEZ Ciro Rodriguez wants to stop tax breaks and subsidies for the big oil companies. He believes to end our dependence on foreign oil, our country needs to develop new technology and alternate energy sources.
He "fought against Washington gridlock to help expand CHIP, the Children's health Insurance Program. Ciro has continued to fight against the big drug companies to simplify Medicare Part D and provide affordable prescriptions for seniors"
Analysis
I think Republican candidate Canseco will win this election. Although Rodriguez has more experience, i believe that he doesn't exactly agree with what the people want.
This article just gives basic information about the race. It gives some background information on the two candidates, and it also gives many of their stances on the issues. However, it doesn't give Canseco's views on the issues. It only states negative attention that he is receiving. For example, it states that Canseco had a warrant for his arrest in 2004. It seems to be a bit biased towards Rodriguez because it doesn't really say anything negative about him. In fact, Rodriguez gets lots of positive coverage in this article.
This article goes into some detail about the challenge that the incumbent, Ciro Rodriguez, is going to face in this election. Canseco has an unusually high percentage of Latino support, who are known for usually voting Republican. This is most likely because both candidates are hispanic. The article explains that a main factor of who wins this race is voter turn out. It doesn't show bias towards either candidate. It also doesn't give either candidate negative attention.
